Amoebiasis is a common infectious disease caused by the organism Entamoeba histolytica. Most persons who get infected with E. Histolytica do not get the disease. It occurs in about 10% of infected persons and mainly involves the large intestine. Other organs like the liver, lungs and brain also may get affected. The infection is frequently chronic, being present in body for many months or years.
The organism E. Histolytica is found in two forms:
1. The active form (Trophozite) found in large intestine and in the infected tissues of the body.
2. The inactive or dormant form (Cysts) found in the intestine and excreted in the stool.
