Health Zeal - THE COLOR OF LIFE

Benefits of Bottle Gourd

March 29th 2008 07:38
Gourds seem to be the most neglected among all other vegetables. The bottle gourd is low in saturated fat and cholesterol yet high in dietary fibre, vitamin C, riboflavin, zinc, thiamin, iron, magnesium and manganese. It also contains moderate amount of vitamin-B complex. Its high water content makes it very cooling. Medicinally, it is used as a purgative, an antidote for certain poisons and a cure for cough. An infusion of the seeds can be drunk to cure chills and headaches. Juice from its leaves is good for jaundice and to cure baldness. Bottle gourd can be boiled and seasoned with mustard and red chillies. Add some salt and chilli powder to it and let it cook. When the vegetable is almost done, powder some roast gram with garlic and add it to the vegetable. Fry for two minutes and it is ready to eat.
