Steps to prevent Kidney Stones

1. If no steps are taken to prevent future formation of kidney stones, 50% of them recur in 10 years and 30% in five years and 10% in one year of removal.
2. The best way to prevent stones is drink lot of water, upto 12 glasses a day. Water helps to flush build ups from the kidneys.
3. Drinking coconut water is also said to help as it contains citrate, a compound that is effective on stones.
4. Reduce excessive usage of animal proteins and dairy products and increase amounts of dietary fibers.
5. Regular intake of potassium citrate in syrup or tablet form reduces chances of recurrence by 90%.
6. Foods which essentially stone formers are oxalate rich foods like tomatoes, black grapes, cauliflower, spinach, cabbage, mushroom, pumpkin, raisins, cashew nuts and alcohols beer and coke products.
7. Foods which reduce stone formation are Citrus fruits, corn, barley and almonds.
