Kidney stones are calcium compound stones, usually oxalate or phosphate compounds of calcium or struvite stones, composed of magnesium and ammonium phosphates or uric acid stones or cystine stones. Over 90% of stones are calcium based and rest is uric acid. One of the leading factors responsible for formation of stones is inadequate intake of water or dehydration. Urine comprises of water and salts. When the fluid or water intake is less, these salts crystallize and form stones. Anyone can have kidney stones. It is primarily found in men and is being diagnosed among women too. Individuals of previous history of stones are likely to develop them again. There will be severe pain in the back or flank or groin, depending on the location of the stone in the ureter.
